My buddy has had a Shotgun sitting around his house forever. It belonged to his Grandfather. I was gonna clean it up for him so we can shoot it but this thing looks pretty old? Any info would help.I know very little about shotguns so please bear with me.-The barrel is 30' 12G and is marked 'Parker Brothers, Makers, Meriden, Conn, Vulcan Steel' on the bottom of the barrel, where the barrel connect to the frame, there are the following markings (Kf) (WK with a circle around it) (42) and a (2).
The barrel has no SN# that I can find.-The bottom hand guard is marked Pat D. Mar, 26, 1878. It also has a SN# 130293-The buttstock and frame are marked Pat'D Jan 18.
1887, there is a 293 that is down in the frame, and a SN# 130293 with a V on top.The pictures tell the rest I suppose.I would like to know:1) All info reguarding the shotgun (Date it was made, Value, etc.)?2) Is it safe to shoot?3) It has some light surface rust and needs a good cleaning. How is this best done? I am not a Parker expert. That said, here is a little information:The gun was made in 1905. It is a VH model with Vulcan steel barrels. It has a #2 frame size( this size was found on 12 & 10ga) and should be stamped on the barrel lug.
The buttstock, frame and forend all match(130293 = 293). The barrels weighed 42oz when they left the factory. Should they weigh less, they have been altered.Source:Hope this helps a little with the ID. Now, the gun needs some serious TLC. In my opinion, a family heirloom, particularly a Parker shotgun needs to be treated in a very special way. This gun needs to see a knowlegeable gunsmith for a complete cleaning and evaluation.
This may cost a bit but it is money well spent on a family heirloom and a fairly valuable gun. After that is done, these early Parkers are very shootable. I'd use low pressure loads from RST, or others, in a 1905 Parker.CAUTION: Things may appear closer in the rear view mirror!
